Drawing the New York Skyline
Step 1:
Draw a straight line of the horizon. Even with the horizon, use four consecutive lines to draw a thin flat rectangle. Below, draw a thicker rectangle. It forms the base of the statue of freedom. Draw a curved line behind the base and let it serve a horizontal wavy line below. It indicates the island and the waves in execution.
Step 2:
Describe the statue of freedom. Draw short lines of the ground and secure them with a curved line. From this, draw two groups of coinciding curved lines. Note the great overlap near the bottom of the statue’s dress and the little ones on the shoulder. Draw a little rectangle partly obscured by the statue’s body and a small rounded rectangle to the hand. What is that worth? It is a tablet recorded with the words “July IV MDCCLXXVI,” which means “July 4, 1776” – the date on which the statement of American Independence was adopted.
Step 3:
Draw curved lines to show the folds of the threads. Then use curved lines to describe the high arm and face. At the top of the hand, describe a “t” shape to form the base of the torch. Above, extend two curved lines, allowing them to be at one point, describing the torch flame. At the shelter of the chair, use curved lines to draw the crown pattern.
Step 4:
Start describing buildings in the Horizon line. Draw a large and narrow rectangle with a sloping high. In the center, draw a lower rectangle and a horizontal line near your top. Then draw a crouching triangle on the roof. In front of Lady Liberty, draw a rectangle with a horizontal line near the top, another rectangle above, a triangle on the roof, and a straight vertical line at the top of the triangle.
Step 5:
Draw more buildings in the middle – a rectangle with a triangle at the top, a series of partial rectangles that overlap vertical lines, and a large rectangle with a culmination ceiling.
Step 6:
Draw narrower vertical rectangles in the middle. Draw a triangle in front of the highest building. Put a series of rectangles on your roof, topped by a vertical line. This building looks like One World Trade Center, an office complex, and a memorial to those lost during the terrorist attacks on September 11.
Step 7:
Draw another rectangle with a flat line near its top in the center. Draw two other slightly smaller rectangles at the top of two narrow rectangles. Lick increasingly narrow rectangular shapes on the roof, followed by a small triangle and a vertical line.
Step 8:
Draw a little rectangle and sharp steep lines above one of the buildings. Then draw a boat in the port. Draw a wavy line to show the water and include a partial trapeze to form the boat’s shell. Draw the cabin using an inclined rectangle. Place small squares along the sides of the cabin to indicate the windows. Then draw two additional rectangular forms on top.
Step 9:
Use curved lines to draw shadows in the sky and ripples in the water.
