New Delhi: Automobile wholesales in April 2022 grew 11.8% to 1,421,241 units, however sales are still below normal levels across segments, according to the latest data shared by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). In April 2021, the industry recorded total wholesales of 1,270,604 units.

Total domestic wholesales for the month include passenger vehicles, two wheelers, three wheelers and quadricycles.

Passenger vehicles were down 3.8% to 251,581 units in April 2022 as against wholesales of 261,633 units during the corresponding month of last year.

The industry sold 112,857 units of passenger cars, 127,213 units of utility vehicles and 11,511 units of vans in April 2022.

The SIAM data does not include sales of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Tata Motors, and Volvo Auto.

Two-wheeler wholesales increased 15.4% to 1,148,696 units during the month under review, as compared to 995,115 units in April 2021. While scooter sales grew to 374,556 units in April 2022, motorcycle sales were up at 735,360 units.

However, one may note that this growth comes on the low base of last year when April 2021 was marred by the second COVID wave.

Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM, said, “Sales of Passenger Vehicles are still below the April 2017 figures, while Two Wheelers are even below the April 2012 figures. Three-wheelers are yet to reach normal levels, as sales are still less than 50% of April 2016 figures.”

Three-wheeler sales for the industry grew 51.1% to 20,938 units in April 2022, as against 13,856 units in April 2021.

“Manufacturers are working hard to manage the supplier ecosystem with agility and flexibility, as supply side challenges continue for the industry. Further, manufacturers are also monitoring the likely impact on demand, due to the recent hike in repo-rates, as it would increase the lending rates to the customers,” Menon said.

The industry sold 26 units of quadricycles in April 2022.

The total production of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two- wheelers, and Quadricycle in April 2022 was at1,874,461 units, SIAM said.
