New Delhi: Country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) on Tuesday said its shareholders have approved the appointment of Hisashi Takeuchi as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company.

99.89% of votes polled through a postal ballot were in favor of the appointment of Takeuchi as MD and CEO, the carmaker said in a regulatory filing.

Takeuchi has been on the board of the company since July 2019 and carries a vast international experience. He was Joint Managing Director (Commercial) at Maruti Suzuki from April 2021 and started his association with the parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) in 1986.

Also, Maruti Suzuki said that 93.09% of votes polled favored the appointment of Kenichi Ayukawa as a whole-time Director designated as Executive Vice Chairman till September 30, 2022.

On March 24 this year, the company had appointed Takeuchi as MD & CEO with effect from April 1, replacing Kenichi Ayukawa who ended his nine year tenure as Maruti Suzuki MD & CEO on March 31, 2022.

MSIL had also informed that Ayukawa, who has been the MD of Maruti Suzuki since April 2013 will continue as a Whole-time Director designated as Executive Vice Chairman till September 30, 2022, and will continue to provide guidance to the company. However, the appointments were subject to shareholder’s approval then.

Ayukawa has spearheaded the company’s transformation to emerge as the country’s largest utility vehicle manufacturer and diversification into the LCV segment with the launch of Super Carry. Maruti Suzuki also revised retail strategy to create the Nexa channel of ‘premium’ showrooms in 2015 under his leadership.
